Panasonic Automotive now provides drivers of large vehicles with an unprecedented 360-degree view of the surrounding environment.

Driving large vehicles such as trailers presents unique challenges, and the need for improved visibility and situational awareness has never been more critical. Recognizing this, Panasonic Automotive Systems Company of America aimed to develop an additional accessory camera system that would enhance their current multi-camera technology.

Panasonic Automotive trusted the team at Tietoevry Create, Tietoevry’s global digital engineering business division, to build an innovative solution that embeds an extra Wi-Fi receiver into the existing system to enable access to remote external cameras.

A 360-degree view for safer driving

Panasonic Automotive’s base multi-camera system uses innovative image-stitching technology that collates inputs from additional cameras installed on the exterior of the vehicle and connected to the vehicle's head unit or infotainment display.

Based on this technology, the new solution provides drivers with extra efficiency and comfort as it eliminates blind spots while driving or parking. Additionally, it helps detect pedestrians and different objects on the road in a more sophisticated manner.

Tietoevry Create also played a significant role in ensuring that the solution meets stringent automotive cybersecurity standards. From the production of the electronic units to their application by drivers, every aspect of this solution is designed with security in mind.

A Collaboration for Innovation

A dedicated and experienced team of Tietoevry Create’s embedded software developers, test engineers and application developers developed the Wi-Fi Receiver unit, an embedded system based on Yocto, designed to interface with remote Wi-Fi cameras. Communication between various devices is established through Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), while video streaming is received over Wi-Fi and presented on the vehicle's head unit.

Panasonic offers this new solution to car manufacturers as a Wireless Camera System. “We are pleased to have partnered with Tietoevry Create to develop this add-on unit which makes drivers better informed and enhances not only their own safety but also of others behind the wheel and pedestrians. The Tietoevry Create team has delivered high value to the entire development project and helped us meet all our customers’ expectations,” Scott Morrison, Director, Software Engineering, said.

“We are thrilled to help Panasonic Automotive supply innovative, reliable, and high-quality automotive solutions to its customers. This new multi-camera solution for vehicles will provide optimal exterior views for efficient and comfortable driving. We look forward to extending continued support to the customer and helping them in their mission to continually enhance driver experience,” Matthieu Donada, Senior Sales Manager, Automotive at Tietoevry Create, commented.
